The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:”… whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, all his past sins will be forgiven.” (Imam Bukhari).

Ramadan in 2023 will begin on Thursday 23rd March and will last for approximately 30 days until Sunday 1st May (exact dates will depend on the sighting of the moon). During Ramadan Muslims around the world will fast from sunrise until sunset and abstain from many activities, including food and drink. It is a month of spirituality and the focus for Muslims in this month is to strengthen their relationship to Allah (God) through prayer, fasting and other good deeds, including charity.

There are great rewards for fasting in Ramadan and Muslims celebrate the month by a three-day celebration at the end of Ramadan called Eid-ul-Fitr.

For Muslims giving charity is a key part of their daily life which is embodied further in the month of Ramadan. There are many examples of verses from the Qur’an and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which show the importance of sharing your wealth with those who are less fortunate.

Learn About Zakat

Zakat, the donation of charity to the poor and needy. It is one of the five pillars of Islam and it is obligatory upon every adult Muslim with a sound mind and the means. Zakat is only payable when an individual owns a specific amount of money or savings (nisab level) after living costs and expenses.

Zakat can be paid at any time during the year but many Muslims pay it during Ramadan because it is one of the most blessed times of the year in Islam.
